The Big One that Didn’t Get Away!
“Can you catch fish in the Lagoon?” is what people ask when they inquire about my Gulf Shores vacation rental house, “Forever Yours.”
I always tell them, truthfully, that we have caught redfish, flounder, trout, crabs, and mullet, some of which were a nice size.
BUT NOW, I can tell them about Richard “Rock” O’Neill of Mobile, who recently caught a 32 1/8 inch speckled trout just east of Little Lagoon Pass.
He was drifting along in his boat, using live shrimp, an 8 pound test line and a small weight about 15 inches above a No. 2 long-shank light wire hook, when he felt a huge tug on his line. He finally caught a glimpse of the big fish.
In fact, it was so big he was wishing he had some help to bring it in! Although he didn’t have access to a scale, the weight of this fish is speculated to be more than 11 pounds!
O’Neill has been fishing in Little Lagoon for 45+ years, and says most of the trout he’s caught have weighed anywhere from 5 pounds to 8 or 9 pounds, but never before this big.
If you want to try your hand at catching one of the big ones in Little Lagoon, and would like to make a reservation at “Forever Yours” Gulf House located on the waterfront of the Lagoon right across from the Pass, contact me now!
